This is the second round of the online training series “What you should know when exporting to Japan”. It briefs in 30 minutes on the latest information on export processes and procedures relating to EU exports to Japan. It also covers trade and administrative rules and regulations relevant to EU businesses which are new to exporting as well as those which carry out regular, on-going businesses with Japan.

Focus is given to small and medium sized EU enterprises (SMEs) and to those sectors which offer growing opportunities to EU exports to Japan, i.e., food and health sectors.

How do we find a qualified partner in Japan?

An EU exporter entering Japan for the first time normally begins with selling its product to a Japanese buyer on a FOB or CIF trade term and avoiding market risks. As the EU exporter sees more sales prospects in Japan, it may search a partner who takes on the ownership of its product and distributes in Japanese market. In Japan, there are various intermediaries who are attracted to EU products while different distributors possess different qualifications.

Japanese markets are very attractive to foreign companies in terms of its purchasing power and its influential position in Asia  Foreign companies, however, can only succeed with the support of a best qualified partner(s) who is able to navigate a foreign partner through Japanese distribution system and Japanese business structures which are very unique to Japan.

There are specialized distributors or simply called importers who handle importation, marketing and promotion, warehousing and other support activities for EU exporters. There are also Keiretsu who have a network of affiliated companies which distribute foreign products in Japanese market. Selecting a best, qualified partner is the key for successful entry and growth in Japanese market.
